Welcome August. Can one say that? August is our last month of summer where we start seeing subtle changes in the air, warm days and cooler nights.
August is Purple Heart Month. The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration. Created by George Washington in 1782, over 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been issued to military personnel who have been wounded or killed in action while serving in the US Armed Forces. An individual can be presented with more than one Purple Heart and can be of any military rank. 1.8 MILLION. You could be sitting next to a Purple Heart recipient and not even know it. Take a moment to think about and acknowledge the profound impact and lasting effects of war on service members and their families.
The first day of school is approaching quickly! Join us in our school supply drive. Look for our school supply bin at the Club and donate today. Thank you to the SAL for their generous monetary donation. It will be put to good use!
The Auxiliary will be at the Farmers Market on August 16th. Stop by and stock up for winter on Lynn’s jams and jellies. They make great gifts for Christmas (never too early to start shopping) as well as her beautiful, embroidered towels. Veterans: don’t forget to pick up you “POP” token!
On August 17th the Legion Family will be taking a bus trip to Fargo to watch a Redhawks game and support the ND/MN Honor Flight program. We are fortunate that more of our area Veterans are being able to participate in Honor Flights to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials and connect with other Veterans.
September 9th will be our next meeting. Hope to see you there.
Working together to support our Veterans!
Erin Hensel
Legion Auxiliary President
